Juanita Woodlands Workparty June 3 2017

King County is planning a large work party in the Juanita Woodlands on June 3, 2017, volunteers are needed.  Open up the pdf to get all the information.  The Juanita Woodlands is a beloved park!  It is a portal of Douglas Fir, Madrona and Big Leaf Maple flanking Juanita Drive. Read the King5 2011 news story about how the Finn Hill neighbors fought off the sale of the woodlands to developers. The Juanita Woodlands’ Douglas Firs are susceptible to root rot and the Himalayan blackberries have a strong foothold choking out new tree growth. Thursday, April 27: Kirkland Planning Commission continues review of Finn Hill Tree Ordinance, at 7pm at Council Chambers in City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue. This will be the Planning Commission’s second session to review the Holmes Point Overlay ordinance, the special tree regulation that applies to Finn Hill west of Juanita Drive. We’ll be providing background information about the ordinance and proposed amendments to it later this week on the FHNA website. Giant Sequoia Redwood Saplings Coming to OO Denny Park

The Green Kirkland Partnership is sharing the following. On Thursday February 23, between 12pm and 2pm, Ford Motors volunteers will be at Juanita Bay Park where volunteer Green Kirkland Steward Nona Ganz (supported by Green Kirkland staff) is hosting a forest restoration event with 20 volunteers from Ford of Kirkland and various photographers and managers from Detroit and Dearborn, MI. Ford volunteers will be conducting forest restoration activities, including  invasive plant removal, mulching with wood chips, and planting 5 western red cedars (purchased and provided by Ford). A photo shoot will occur at Juanita Bay Park during the volunteer event....

Blue Water Project at OO Denny Park

The Green Kirkland Partnership received funding from the Royal Bank of Canada’s Blue Water Project through the Kirkland Parks Foundation to do restoration work in the riparian forest along Denny Creek in O.O. Denny Park. The work will be happening this month. The work site is located between the stream and the northern trail, adjacent to the parking lot northeast of Holmes Point Drive. VOLUNTEER on Saturday February 25 10 am – 2pm The EarthCorps crew will be working in the sensitive areas closer to the stream and also in areas too steep for volunteers to work in. Then, on Saturday February 25, we will host a volunteer event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with EarthCorps. More information about the event is available on their website. The restoration work will entail removing invasive plants, mostly Himalayan blackberry and English ivy, and replanting with native vegetation.
