April 19 Walk in the Park: Perimeter Trail in St. Ed Park

On April 19, 2014 we’ll walk the Perimeter trail at St Edward State Park, meeting  by the ranger’s office at 10:00 AM.  April 19, 2014 is a free day for state parks, so you will not need to pay parking or display your Discover Pass ($10/day or $30/year). Plan on about 1 to 1  1/2 hours for the 1.5 mile loop (because we stop and point out interesting aspects of the park), although there are many opportunities to quickly cut back to the parking lot. Children (including those in strollers) and on-leash friendly dogs are  welcome. UPDATE…we met new...

Meeting Jan 14 on Rescuing St. Edward Seminary Building – Still Scheduled!

St Edward Park – Update: The Seattle Times reports that the lease proposal summarized below has been withdrawn: http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2022626943_leasefailxml.html. However, the Parks Department is going ahead with the public hearing that it has scheduled for January 14. The time and venue have not changed. Here’s a link to the Parks Department’s news  release:  http://www.parks.wa.gov/newsreleases/?number=%2014-002.  Our original post: Rescue for the decaying seminary building or private business taking over public land? In November, many residents of Finn Hill and other users of Saint Edward State Park were surprised to learn in an article in Crosscut about possibilities of a private developer renovating the seminary building and using it for private business. Here’s a link to the Crosscut article. http://crosscut.com/2013/11/22/eastside/117583/park-system-may-save-grand-building-lake-washingto/ In late December, Washington State Park’s announced a public meeting to be held on January 14, 2014 at 6:30 pm, Northshore Utility District, 6830 N.E. 185th Street, Kenmore. Here’s a link to their public announcement. http://www.parks.wa.gov/newsreleases/?number=%2013-068 At this point, most of us have more questions than answers about impact on the park and the users. The preservation of our parks and natural land ranks very high with residents of Finn Hill, so please attend the meeting, learn more about the subject and have your voice...

Volunteer in Big Finn Hill Park Sat. Dec 14

Sparks flew during our work party to upgrade the Big Finn Hill kiosk base on Saturday Dec 7.  That’s what happens when one uses a pick ax on frozen soil with rocks.  We had an excellent turn out but chopping through the permafrost was slow and the volunteers were very warm.  After we discovered the gravel was frozen into the dump truck and the pile of dirt had a frozen crust, we decided to reconvene on Saturday Dec 14 (9:30 am) if Mother Nature permits. Please stop by to enjoy the new bench, a solid, comfortable work of art by King...

There is a maintenance work party in Big Finn Hill Park scheduled for Saturday Dec 7 from 9:30 am to noon.  We’ll meet by the Big Finn Hill Park sign on 138th PL about 100 yards west of Juanita Drive.  The focus of our activities will be to build an elevated base for the new kiosk so that people who are less than 7 feet tall can read the signs on the boards. Wheel barrows and shovels for moving gravel will be useful.  Of course, bring gloves and bottles of water.       Jeanette Leach is on the Finn Hill...

Walk in the Park: Big Finn Hill Park west side

Complexities of Life Simplified with a Walk in the Woods  During our Sunday walk, 10 adults, five children and four dogs hiked the long perimeter trail in Big Finn Hill Park west of Juanita. The 1.5 hour trail walk led us through carpets of fern, thimbleberry, salal with tall trees of Douglas Fir, Maple, Alder and the Madrona Grove. George Meredith joined me in leading the nature hike. He pointed out some of the elements highlighting historical uses of the park including where old homesteads were located the large central blackberry patch, old roadbeds and garbage tips. It has always been a...
