Kirkland Parks — October 24 and 25 events to review possible bond and levy

Funding for Kirkland Parks – Open House Events on October 24 and 25:  The city is looking at options for a bond and levy to support city parks and recreation services.  Some of the options include acquiring new properties for parks and green space (particularly for underserved areas, such as the eastern side of Finn Hill), developing recreational facilities (including an indoor gym), and acquiring the Eastide rail right-or-way that runs through Kirkland. The city has scheduled two open houses so that Kirkland residents can learn more: Monday, October 24, 2011 North Kirkland Community Center, 12421 103rd Avenue N.E. Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Peter Kirk Community Center, 352 Kirkland Avenue  Residents can drop by either open house anytime between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  The Parks and Community Services Department is also encouraging residents to either take a brief on-line survey. You can learn more, and take the survey, at: http://www.kirklandwa.gov/depart/parks/Boards___Councils/Park_Funding_Exploratory_Committee.htm. (Note scroll down to the bottom of the page to locate the survey link.)...

Juanita Woodlands work party on Saturday, November 5

Want some good wholesome exercise on a brisk November morning? Sure you do! And DCNA has you covered! We’re organizing a work party in the eastern portion of the Juanita Woodlands on Saturday, November 5, to clean out blackberries and other invasives so that we’ll be ready to plant over 2000 new trees in January. We’ll meet at 9am on 120th Street, which runs east from Juanita Drive (just below the Plaza Garcia Restaurant). Park on the street. If you have hand tools — loppers, clippers, and shovels — feel free to bring them, but we will have a supply of tools as well. Be sure to grab some gloves, lace up a pair of sturdy shoes, and put on some layers to keep out the early morning chill. But you’ll warm up soon enough…and we’ll have hot chocolate and coffee for you! There will be plenty to do for kids and adults alike. Are you game? Let us know by responding on this website or dropping us at note at info@dennycreek.org. Or call Scott Morris at...

DCNA board approves project list for 2011-2012

DCNA’s board recently reviewed its objectives for 2011-2012. Following is a brief description of what we chose as our priorities. We will be adding more information about each to our website in the next few months, but, in the meantime, take a look at the summaries below and let us know what you think. Even better, if they look like activities that you would like to get involved in, please let us know. None of these projects will move forward without community support, and there is no shortage of tasks for which we need volunteers: Juanita Woodlands Restoration:  We are midway through a 5 year plan to plant approximately 10,000 new trees in sections of the Woodlands where existing stands of Doug fir are dying from root rot. A copy of the plan is posted on our website. Generally we schedule our planting events on and around Martin Luther King Day in January. Also, at other times of the year, we schedule maintenance work parties to clear invasive species from prospective planting sites and to ensure that they are not encroaching on newly planted trees while they are establishing themselves. Our goal is maintain a consistent program of planting, removing invasives and monitoring mature trees for root rot for the next decade. Our hope is that the Woodlands will be largely self-sustaining after that time period has elapsed. Trail...
